Turning 65? - Today's Medicare is not our Parents or even last years Medicare

Being new to Medicare and selecting a Medicare health and prescription plan can seem like a daunting task, after all up until now you have had no reason to familiarize yourself with how Medicare works; and it is different from an employers group medical plan or an individual plan. The process can also at times seem overwhelming when it seems like everyday you are receiving another packet of information from a company telling you why their plan is the best. Some important points to remember as your 65th birthday approaches are:

  • You have seven months to make your selections. Three months prior to your birthday, the month of your birthday and three months after your birthday. This is called the open enrollment period and you are guaranteed coverage, regardless of your health.
  • If you continue to work when you turn 65 and will have group health coverage through your employer, you need to return your Medicare card. This will ensure you are not being charged the $110.50 Part B premium. When you retire, if you have had group health coverage you will be guaranteed coverage just as in the open enrollment period.
  • Determine what you can afford. Then review the different plans that fit your budget.
  • What importance do you place on going to the doctor or hospital of your choice without referral.
  • The easiest way to compare health plans and cost options is to utilize the services of an independent agency who specializes in Medicare health and prescription plans available in New Jersey. This eliminates having to talk with a dozen agents or company representatives and you are assured of receiving transparent unbiased advice. There should never be any cost to you for this service.
  • Do the research and decide for yourself. The two web sites listed below should provide you with sufficient information to make you feel comfortable making the decision on your own.
